Aha Nets Game-Winner In UR Weekend Sweep
09/21/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond Freshman Olivia Aha (Norfolk, Massachusetts) fired in a game-winning goal from 25 yards out to take out visiting Old Dominion 3-2 Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action. After a win on Friday night against Princeton, the Spiders opened up Robins Stadium with a pair of wins for the weekend, the first time winning Friday and Sunday at home since the final weekend of the 2011 season. Richmond holds a winning record for the first time this season, at 5-4. The Monarchs slip to 1-5-2 on the season.
Richmond has 17 total goals near the midway point of the season, one more goal than scored in the entirety of the 2013 season.
The Spiders got up 2-0 thanks to a methodical opening half of possession and crisp passing. Redshirt Freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) got the Spiders on the board first with a goal from six yards near post. Assists were to Aha and junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) in the 22nd minute. Carrigan tied for the team lead with five goals and Colligan leads the Spiders with seven assists.

Right before the half, Richmond got a brilliant goal for the highlight reel. Junior Darian Podmajersky (Yorba Linda, California) was set up on the near sideline by senior Samantha Cicconi (Madison, New Jersey) and dribbled to the corner for a long pass just over the keeper to a flying Lindsay Egbers (Clifton, Virginia / Centreville HS), who lofted the ball into the upper 90 at point-blank range for the 2-0 lead. The goal came with just 43 seconds on the clock before the half. It was her first career goal.
Richmond led with 13 shots to ODU's eight in the opening 45 minutes.
The Monarchs came out more aggressively in the second stanza and found themselves in good positions to capitalize on mistakes. The Spiders misplayed a ball in the back, which allowed Jessie Klamut to find the loose ball and power it in from 13 yards in the 52nd minute for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and a one-goal margin.
The Monarchs tied the game five minutes later when a collision in the back allowed an open Madison Hogan to tie it with her second goal of the season.
It was five minutes from that point after a throw in for the Spiders by Podmajersky that Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) dribbled to open space and fed to Aha, who was unmarked and fired a high shot that got a piece of the crossbar and in off of keeper Meredith Lenox for the game winner.
Aha was credited with both her second assist and goal of the season. Cicconi and Podmajersky both received their first assists of 2014.
Lenox got the loss, dropping her record to 0-2-1. She made 12 saves in the contest.
Richmond keeper Emily Kelly (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) posted four saves and got her fifth win of the year (5-3).
Richmond will host two more matches next weekend, starting Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Saint Joseph's in a non-conference match.
NOTES: Richmond tied its season high in goals scored with three (set Friday night)… It was the first win for the Spiders when one player did not have more than one goal… Riefner has registered a point (a goal and/or assist) in a teambest five different contests... She leads all Spiders with 14 points (five goals, four assists) this season... Five different players got an assist in the match, a season high… The Spiders last won a Friday/Sunday home weekend pair on October 28 & 30, 2011 against Rhode Island and Massachusetts, both in identical 1-0 results.
