Women's Tennis Triumphs Over Longwood

RICHMOND, Va.- Women's tennis defeated instate competitor, Longwood, 6-1 in the first home match of the season on Sunday.
The Spiders came out strong, winning all three doubles matches. Anna Abadias and Katya Salas won 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Melissa Kandinata and Alexandra Smyth handily defeated Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau 8-1 at the No. 2 position while Emily Gitman and Ripley Hartmeyer won 8-5.
The Spiders continued into singles play with the momentum. Kandinata blanked Marta Pinyol 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot.
"Melissa was near perfection today," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "She constructed beautiful points and finished at the net.
The freshman strung together three solid wins. Abadias defeated Malin Allgurin 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 2 position. Salas pulled out a win over Allison Shulman 5-7, 6-4 (9) at the No. 3 spot, while Emily Gitman played her way to victory against Sarah Moomau 6-2, 6-1.
"All three freshman played at a high level today," said Wesselink. "They are a bit like the Three Muskateers- very different with their own exceptional skills and thriving in a team setting."
Senior Alex Smyth pulled out a 6-2, 2-1 win over Hannah Hill despite injury at the No. 5 position.
"Captain Alex Smyth showed great leadership in dominating despite being hampered by an injury," said Wesselink.
The team travels up to Philly for a three match road swing against, Penn, Temple and Saint Joseph's next weekend.
