WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Richmond women's tennis team continued fall play at the Wake Forest Invitational this past weekend.
Senior Erin Clark and junior Kelly Tidwell each recorded key victories in the A Singles bracket. Clark defeated Alexandra Whitehead from UNC Greensboro and Tidwell knocked off Lucy Dougherty from UNC Greensboro.
"Erin Clark played very well and lost two matches to ranked opponents 6-4 in the third sets," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "Erin's aggressive style is developing into a game that makes her a threat to anyone."
Clark and sophomore Helen Cunningham recorded a win in doubles by defeating Ali Gores/Teresa Wang of Davidson 8-6.
"Erin and Helen Cunningham have both looked very strong in some big matches and are capable of playing at a much higher level this year," said Wesselink.
Cunningham and sophomore Joanna Matuszczyk picked up two wins in the B Singles bracket, while freshman Sydney Grant recorded one victory.
"Joanna has come back very fit and faster," said Wesselink. "Her mental toughness will give opponents serious problems."
Freshman Alex Smyth and sophomore Catherine Crystal each recorded multiple wins in the C Singles bracket.
"Alexandra Smyth has fought off sickness during both of our tournaments," said Wesselink. "She has a big game and a toughness that gives her huge potential."
"Catherine Crystal had the best win/loss record at Wake going 3-1 over the weekend," said Wesselink. "If Catherine continues to develop her variety and serve, she could contend for a spot."
ITA Regional Championship competition begin in Blacksburg, Va. Oct. 22nd.
