UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Whitney Sikes scored just two minutes into the contest to lead the University of Richmond women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over La Salle today at First Market Stadium. With the win, the Spiders improve to 4-4-1, 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 while La Salle falls to 5-4-2, 1-2-0 in the league.
Sikes gathered a mid-field pass from sophomore Kelsey Blank and dribbled up the right side of the field before putting a well-placed shot into the left corner of the goal to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
With just over ten minutes remaining in the contest, the Explorers had their best scoring opportunity with a trio of shots in front of the Richmond goal but Spider goalkeeper Kelly Kolker and the Richmond defense thwarted the attempts. La Salle took seven shots to the Spiders' four in the second half.
At the 85:35 point, freshman Ali LeVIne scored her first career goal and the Spiders held a 2-0 lead. Junior Annette Isham assisted on the score.
Kolker earned her first shutout of the year, making four saves in the net for the Spiders. La Salle goalkeeper Kerry Schamberger recorded five saves.
The Spiders next face Massachusetts in Amherst, the site of the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championships, on Friday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m.
