
Women's Tennis Handles George Washington, 6-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Not only was it the University of Richmond women's tennis team's spring 2002 opener, but it also marked the squad's first-ever Atlantic 10 match. The Spiders made an impressive entrance into conference action as they knocked-off George Washington, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond.
Richmond won five of six singles matches on the day, all of which came in straight sets. Sophomore Jeannette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) and junior Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), playing at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively, each won their matches, 6-2, 6-4. Spider freshmen Lindsay Cox (Workingham Berks, U.K./Edgbarrow) and Courtney Klein (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) opened their spring careers with solid victories as did junior Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School) who won at the No. 5 position.
The Spiders swept through the doubles competition as they won by a combined score of 24-10. Cluskey teamed with fellow sophomore Patty Devlin (York, Pa./York Suburban) to win at the No. 1 spot, 8-5. Bagnato and Cox teamed together at the No. 2 spot and Cohen teamed with Klein at the No. 3 position as the tandems won their matches, 8-4 and 8-1, respectively.
Richmond will return to action on January 26 as the Spiders travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face the North Carolina Tar Heels at noon.
