The University of Richmond and cross-town rival VCU played to a 3-3 double overtime tie in women's college soccer action on Tuesday night at Sports Backers Stadium.
The Rams would strike first as forward Jen Parsons led a fast break down the left side and fired a direct shot at Spiders goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill). Samuhel was able to block the shot however the rebound went directly to a trailing Eve Briere, who connected on her first goal of the season. With VCU leading 2-0, the Spiders put a score on their side of the board in the 28th minute. Sophomore midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) sent a cross to junior Anne Rieser (Middletown, Md./Middletown) who in turn found fellow classmate Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) who lofted a soft roller over the VCU keeper and into the right corner of the goal. VCU held a 2-1 edge at the break.
Eleven minutes into the second stanza, the Rams would stretch their lead back to two. Another Parsons blast off of keeper Samuhel would allow another VCU score, this one from sophomore Leah Robinson. VCU was unable to hold onto the lead as Rettig netted an open net shot in the 75th minute off a touch pass from Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland. Just over a minute later, the Spiders would knot the score for the third time of the evening. Sophomore Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti) delivered the long pass to a streaking Rettig who crossed the ball to Merriam for the score who scored from eight yards out.
The Spiders best scoring opportunity in the extra stanzas came with 1:35 remaining in the second overtime when Rettig delivered a bullet which VCU goalie Chrissy Lloyd was able to dive and stop. Lloyd collected seven saves in the contest while Samuhel recorded nine.
