UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond saw four different players score as they blanked Xavier Sunday afternoon, 4-0, at First Market Stadium. The Spiders improve to 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10, 3-5-0 overall.
The Spiders got on the board ten minutes into the contest when junior defender Alesha Irvin (Maclay, Fla./Maclay) ripped a shot from 20 yards out over the outstretched hands of Xavier netminder Megan Veith for her first career goal. The Musketeers fired nine shots in the first stanza but could not finish, as Richmond goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) collected seven of her 10 saves in the first half.
Richmond exploded offensively in the second half with all of its goals coming on breakaway situations. In the 60th minute, senior Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) broke through, streaking down the right side and finding freshman forward Whitney Sikes (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview) in front of the net. Twelve minutes later, Gincel would add a score of her own, her second of the season. Sophomore back Edda Gardarsdottir finished up the scoring in the 89th minute, firing a shot to the far right corner that hit the post and went into the net.
The Spiders continue Atlantic 10 play next weekend hosting St. Joseph's (Oct. 12) and Temple (Oct. 14).
