Women's Soccer Falls to Dayton, 2-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Dayton sophomore midfielder Kara Kenney netted the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to lift the Flyers past the University of Richmond, 2-1 in Atlantic 10 women's college soccer action on Friday night at First Market Stadium. With the loss, the Spiders fall to 2-5-0, 1-1-0 while the Flyers improve to 4-5-0, 2-0-0.
The Flyers scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute on a breakaway as Dayton sophomore Judy Aschenbrener delivered a shot into the left side of the net for the score. Richmond junior midfielder Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) struck in the 49th minute for the Spiders, heading in the pass from freshman Ella Thorsteinsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Mennatskolinni) to knot the score at 1-1.
Kenny registered Dayton's second score of the game in the 82nd minute as her shot from 30 yards out soared high and out of the hands of Spiders goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill). With less than six minutes remaining, Richmond would deliver a nearly identical strike on goal when senior Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) fired a bullet from 30 yards away that was blocked by UD keeper Stephanie Weisenfeld.
Richmond hosts Xavier on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium. The Flyers travel to Washington, D.C. to face George Washington on Sunday.
