RICHMOND, Va. - Bolstered by a second half goal by senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal), the No. 25-ranked University of Richmond women's soccer team notched a 1-0 victory over George Mason in Colonial Athletic Association action this evening at UR Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Richmond.
Winners of three straight matches and six of their last eight contests, the Spiders improve to a program best-ever 12-5-0 and are now tied with William & Mary for first place atop the conference standings at 6-1-0. Meanwhile, the Patriots slip to 9-8-0 on the campaign and 4-2-0 in league play.
On "Senior Night," it was Sands, perhaps the most explosive goal scorer in program history, who provided the decisive strike. After controlling a high-arching pass from freshman midfielder Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti), Sands extended GMU freshman 'keeper Sarah Coughlin (ten saves) and chipped in a shot inside the penalty area at the 73:54 mark. Sands, playing the final regular season home match of her brilliant career, is Richmond's all-time goals (49) and points (118) leader. She also delivered her program-best 14th game-winning goal tonight.
After a closely contested first half on the offensive end - Mason held a 8-7 advantage on shots - Richmond responded, out-shooting the Patriots 14-3 in the closing half. Spider junior net-minder Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) made eight stops and earned her fifth shutout of the season.
With tonight's victory, the Spiders snapped a four-match series winless streak versus George Mason that dated back to the 1996 campaign.
Richmond plays its final regular season match of the season on Sunday, October 29, visiting at Old Dominion at 2 p.m.
