WILMINGTON, N.C. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team completed an impressive week this evening with a 3-1 victory over UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action at UNCW Soccer Stadium. The victory comes on the heels of the Spiders' 4-1 road win over No. 16-ranked Virginia on Wednesday, October 18.
With the triumph, Richmond improves to a program best-ever 11-5-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Seahawks slip to 6-11-0 on the campaign and 0-7-0 in league action.
Spider junior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) opened the scoring 15:50 into the match, using her match-breaking to weave her way through the UNC Wilmington defense and blast in a 20-yard shot for her third goal of the season.
The 'Hawks tied the match at the 32:12 mark when Michelle Doherty controlled a loose ball inside the penalty area and found the back of the net. However, just 19 seconds later, Richmond freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) converted on a penalty kick (32:31) to put the Spiders ahead, 2-1. In what would prove to be the final goal of the contest, Richmond added to its lead just before intermission. Freshman back Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti) scored off of an assist from Spider senior back Nicole Froman (Glen Arm, Md./Loch Raven), lofting a shot over the outstretched arms of UNC Wilmington 'keeper Becky Tolzman at 42:22.
Spider junior net-minder Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) played the entire 90 minutes and made three saves to notch her eleventh win of the campaign. Richmond has now outscored its opponents 30-8 in the team's 11 wins this season.
