RICHMOND, Va. - A quartet of Spiders delivered goals and Richmond's women's soccer team posted three second half goals to defeat cross-town rival VCU, 4-1 tonight in Colonial Athletic Association action at UR Soccer Complex. Balanced scoring has been a trademark in Richmond's most recent wins with four different players finding the back of the net in the Spiders 4-0 triumph over American on Wednesday. Tonight was no different as Richmond jumped out to an early advantage just 2:18 into the match when sophomore forward Anne Rieser (Middltown, Md./Middletown) headed in a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional). For Rieser, it was her team-leading third goal of the campaign, while Merriam registered her Richmond-best eighth point.
The two teams' played on even terms for the next 55 minutes, before VCU knotted the contest when sophomore forward Genevieve Trembley drilled in a shot from just outside the penalty area at 58:04 to knot the contest at 1-all. However, Richmond responded, scoring three goals in the match's last 20 minutes to secure the victory.
Junior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) started the onslought, using her match-breaking speed to beat Ram 'keeper Chrissy Lloyd at the 70:45 mark, courtesy of an assist from senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal). Just 1:47 later, freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) controlled a loose ball in the penalty box and headed in a shot from five yards out. Freshman midfielder Lauren Alberts (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield) delivered her first collegiate goal at 85:14 on a play set up by junior midfielder Kate Dougan (West Kingston, R.I./South Kingston) to account for the contest's final goal.
On Sunday, Richmond takes on the No. 2 team in the nation in Clemson. Entering this week's play, the Tigers stand at 10-0-0 on the season and list among their victories a 2-1 decision over defending national champion and previously unbeaten North Carolina on September 13.
"Matches like this are why we play," said Richmond head women's soccer coach Peter Albright. "Having the chance to play Clemson is very exciting amd something we look forward to. This is a great chance for soccer fans in the Richmond area to see the highest level of collegiate women's soccer.
