CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Richmond sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) accounted for two of the team's three second half goals to bolster the Spiders to an impressive wire-to-wire 4-1 victory over No. 16-ranked Virginia tonight at Klockner Stadium.
With the win, the Spiders improve to a program-best 10-5-0 overall through 15 contests. In addition, the victory marks Richmond's second triumph over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. The Spiders, who recorded perhaps its most impressive win of the season this evening, also posted a 1-0 victory over then-No. 9 Maryland on September 9 at UR Soccer Complex. Following tonight's setback, the Cavaliers slip to 8-7-0 on the campaign.
Spider senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) opened the scoring at the 20:18 mark, denting the back of the net from the top of the penalty area courtesy of a perfect crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton).
Owning a 1-0 advantage at intermission, Richmond proceeded to take control of the match in the second half. Merriam struck for her first goal of the match at the 46:36 mark to begin the onslaught. Just 2:40 later, Richmond sophomore forward Bethany Shewmaker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) netted her first collegiate goal to balloon Richmond's advantage to 3-1. At the 84:00 mark, Merriam scored again, blistering a shot into the back of the net off of an assist from freshman back Edda Gardarsdttir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti). For Merriam, it was her team-leading sixth goal and 17th point of her breakthrough sophomore season. Virginia senior Lori Lindsey converted on a penalty kick at 86:02 to provide the hosts only scoring.
Richmond has now outscored its opponents 27-7 in its ten wins this season and own an 18-0-0 mark when leading at half and 23-1-0 record when scoring the match's first goal over the past two seasons.
The Spiders return to Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday, October 20, visiting UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
