Richmond Upends Princeton, 3-1

RICHMOND, Va. - A trio of Spiders scored goals as the No. 25-ranked University of Richmond women's soccer team posted a 3-1 opening round win over Princeton in its host event, the Wachovia Classic, this evening a UR Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Richmond. With the victory, Richmond is off to their best start in the program's five-year history at 8-3-0, while the Tigers fall to 7-2-0 on the campaign.
Princeton entered the match having allowed just one goal through eight matches this season. However, the Spiders struck early with freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) blasting a seven-yard shot into the back of the net off of a double-assist from senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) and junior midfielder Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) at the 24:45 mark. For Rettig, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the campaign.
The Spiders added to its advantage at 32:11 when freshman midfielder Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) beat Princeton 'keeper Jordan Rettig (four saves) to the far post with a five-yard shot, with Rettig and freshman back Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) assisting on the goal. With the Spiders holding a 2-0 halftime lead, Sands was the beneficiary of Richmond's outstanding playmaking, scoring from close range at 57:06 to balloon Richmond's advantage to 3-0. Sands has registered a team-leading 13 points on four goals and five assists this season.
Princeton received a late goal from freshman forward Theresa Sherry off of an assist from junior midfielder Lindsey Gober at 83:48. Spider junior net-minder Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was outstanding between the pipes, recording a season-high 14 saves.
Winners of six of its last seven matches, Richmond competes for the tournament title on Sunday, October 8 against Radford, a 3-2 double overtime victor over American earlier this afternoon, at 2 p.m. The contest follows the Princeton versus American matchup at 12 p.m.
