PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Syracuse freshman midfielder Erica Mastrogiacomo scored the game-winning goal at 109:55 to lift the Orangewomen to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 23 Richmond in the first round of the Rutgers Doubletree Classic. With the loss, the Spiders record evens at 2-2-0, while Syracuse improves to 5-2-0.
On the decisive strike, Mastrogiacomo used her speed to weave her way through the Spiders defense and dented the back of the net to send Richmond to its second one-goal loss of the season.
Syracuse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Candy Reich scored off of a crossing pass from senior forward Erin O'Grady at 11:18. The two teams played on even terms for the next 70-plus minutes before Spider senior back Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) controlled a crossing pass from junior attacker Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) and scored from close range at 85:02.
The Spiders will return to action on Sunday, September 17, facing tournament host Rutgers at 2 p.m.
