Richmond Upends No. 9 Maryland, 1-0

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond used a first half goal by sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) at the 5:30 mark to stun No. 9 Maryland, 1-0 in women's soccer action at UR Soccer Complex. With the victory, the Spiders improve to 2-1-0 overall, while the Terrapins fall to 3-2-0.
On the game-winning strike, senior co-captain Nicole Froman (Glen Arm, Md./Loch Raven) played a throw-in to senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal), who flicked a ball to Merriam. She deposited the decisive goal just inside the far post to mark to account for the match's only scoring. The goal was Merriam's first of the season, while both Sands and Froman delivered their first assist of the campaign.
"It was a comprehensive effort by our team," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We came out with a great deal of intensity and we utilized our team speed. I am very proud of how we played at both ends of the field."
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) played all 90 minutes and made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season and registered her 20th career blanking. Terp senior 'keeper Riki-Ann Serrins made six saves on 18 Spider shots.
Richmond returns to action on Friday, September 15, meeting Syracuse in the first round of the Rutgers University Classic in Piscataway, N.J. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
