RICHMOND, Va. - The No. 22-ranked Duke University women's soccer team received a goal at 78:16 from junior forward Sarah Pickens to post a 1-0 win over Richmond in the Spiders' 2000 regular season home opener before 613 fans at UR Soccer Complex this afternoon. With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while Richmond falls to 1-1-0 overall.
On the game-winning strike, Pickens controlled freshman net-minder Thora Helgadottir's goal kick near midfield, used her quickness to dribble her way through the Spiders tiring defense and ultimately beat onrushing Spider 'keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) to the far post from seven yards out. Pickens led the Blue Devils with seven shots on goal for the day.
Samuhel was brilliant in the nets for Richmond, making 10 saves on 25 Duke shots. Senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) paced the Spiders with four shots. Despite having scoring opportunities in the opening half, Duke's defense tightened and created chances for their offense, outshooting the Spiders 25-8 for the contest.
A furious Richmond rally in the closing seconds fell short as the Blue Devils held on for their second straight win.
The Spiders will return to action against another Atlantic Coast Conference foe, hosting Maryland on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
