Chris Schaefer was named the new Assistant Director of Athletics for Annual Giving in March of 2020. Schaefer was elevated to Associate Athletic Director for Development in September of 2021, leading the Spider Athletic Fund in all aspects.
Schaefer handled all day-to-day efforts in annual giving for athletics. During his time with the Spiders, he led the rebrand of the Spider Club into the Spider Athletic Fund, ringing in a new era for Spider Athletics. He helped the SAF increase its annual giving 8% in the fiscal year 2020 and saw a 9% increase in fiscal year 2021, despite dealing with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schaefer spent seven years at Old Dominion, including three years as the Director of Development for the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation. He oversaw and managed the ODU Annual Fund that had an $850,000 (31%) increase in 2019.
Schaefer was a contributing member of the fundraising team that has raised $41 million in three years towards a $40 million capital campaign. He personally secured over $1,300,000 in major gifts in the 2019 fiscal year for ODU Athletics, including multiple planned gifts and many first-time major gifts.
Schafer managed multiple seat selection processes at football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball while implementing an overhaul of the Athletic Foundation membership structure in response to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. He created and implemented a commemorative brick campaign that raised $157,000 for the new football stadium at ODU.
Schaefer also developed and implemented the #MonarchMatch, an end of the year fundraising initiative that successfully raised over $60,000. He oversaw and managed the Monarch Legacy Society (planned giving), which raised over $2.5 million in the last two years.
Schaefer spent one year (2016-17) as an Assistant Director of Development. He raised over $75,000 in three weeks with the #ODUBowlBound campaign and was responsible for the Power of Pride referral program that generated over $20,000 in new annual revenue.
Schaefer worked in the Old Dominion ticket office for three years as an assistant director of ticketing from 2013-16. He worked primarily with the ODU season ticket holders and ODAF priority points system. Prior to ODU, he spent one year in the ticket office at North Carolina State.
Schaefer graduated from N.C. State in 2012 with a degree in sport management while earning his Masters in sport management from ODU in 2016. He is married to the former Nicole Gabriel and they have one daughter, Noelle.
