In 2023-24, Boyden helped the Spiders to their first regular season Atlantic 10 title as Richmond went 23-10 overall and 15-3 in A-10 play, setting a school record for conference wins in a season. Richmond won 11 straight games from mid-December through the end of January, the program's longest win streak since 1935. That streak included a win vs 16th-ranked Dayton on January 27, part of Richmond's 15-1 record in the Robins Center during the season. Boyden led a Spiders defense that ranked 18th in D-I in opponents' field goal percentage (40.5) and 27th in opponents' points per game (66.3). Richmond finished 33rd in KenPom's defensive efficiency metric, its best result since 2004.
In his first season with the Spiders in 2022-23, Richmond posted wins over NCAA Tournament teams Drake and FDU in the regular season and defeated Massachusetts by 33 points in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, the second-largest margin of victory in the event's history. Boyden, who managed the team's defensive strategies and tactics, took on additional responsibilities in February when Head Coach Chris Mooney stepped away from the program to undergo heart surgery.
Entering his second season at UR, Boyden was one of eight individuals identified as the top assistant coaches in the Atlantic 10 by CBB Nation.
Prior to coming to Richmond, Boyden served as an assistant coach at UNC Greensboro in 2021-22 as the Spartans posted a sixth straight winning season.
Boyden spent five seasons as an assistant at Radford before joining UNCG, helping the Highlanders to regular-season Big South titles in 2019 and 2020 and a Big South Tournament championship in 2018. The 2017-18 Highlanders finished with a school-record 23 wins, including a victory over Long Island in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament, the first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
After earning All-Conference honors as a player at Western Kentucky, Boyden spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Hilltoppers in two stints, from 2008-10 and 2012-16. During that span, Boyden led WKU to a five 20-win seasons and a pair of Sun Belt Tournament championships, in 2009 and 2013. In 2009, the Hilltoppers defeated 5-seed Illinois in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Boyden’s first assistant coach position was at Eastern Kentucky University under former Richmond assistant Jeff Neubauer. Boyden spent three seasons on the staff at EKU from 2005 to 2008, helping the Colonels to the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
After graduating from Western Kentucky in 2003, Boyden spent two seasons at the University of Georgia, serving as an administrative assistant with the men’s basketball program in 2003-04 and the team’s Director of Basketball Operations in 2004-05.
As a player, Boyden was a two-time captain who started 123 games for Western Kentucky from 1999-2003, scoring 1,167 points and earning All-Sun Belt Conference honors following his junior and senior seasons. He led the Hilltoppers to regular season and Sun Belt Tournament titles in 2001, 2002, and 2003 as WKU posted a combined 76-20 record climbed as high as 17th in the AP Top 25 (November 2001).

That same year, he was tabbed an All-Metro selection by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He then prepped at Virginia's Fork Union Military Academy for the 1998-99 season.
