Richmond, Va. — In a back-and-forth slugfest that went down to the final quarter, Richmond delivered the decisive punch when it mattered most.
Locked in an even battle for three quarters, the No. 2 Spiders broke an 8–8 tie entering the fourth by outscoring No. 13 Georgetown 6–2 in the final period to secure a 14–10 victory Saturday at Robins Stadium, improving to 6–0 on the season and continuing the best start in program history.
With the win, Richmond also earned its first home victory over Georgetown and second overall in the series, improved to 16 wins in its last 17 games, and picked up its fourth win in six games against a team ranked or receiving votes.
Lucas Littlejohn and Gavin Creo led the Richmond offense with hat tricks, while Daniel Picart added a goal and two assists for three points. Aidan O'Neil finished with two goals and two assists and now sits one goal shy of the 100th goal of his career.
Hunter Smith delivered a standout performance from the defensive end, scoring a goal to break up a Hoyas 10-man ride while leading the Spiders with three caused turnovers and adding four ground balls. His second-quarter goal came on an assist from fellow defenseman Michael Farrell. Jack Pilling also anchored the defensive effort with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while goalie Connor Knight came up with nine saves.
The game unfolded as a heavyweight exchange for much of the afternoon. Georgetown struck first and carried a 4–3 lead after the opening quarter, but Richmond responded in the second. Smith's goal sparked the Spiders before Creo's second goal of the half came with seven seconds remaining to send Richmond into the break with a narrow 7–6 advantage.
The back-and-forth continued in the third quarter. Georgetown tied the game at 7–7 early in the period before Littlejohn gave Richmond another edge with an assist from O'Neil. The Hoyas answered again, tying the contest at 8–8 with 7:41 remaining in the quarter to set the stage for the decisive fourth.
Richmond wasted little time seizing momentum in the final frame. Picart scored just over a minute into the quarter to give the Spiders a 9–8 lead before Georgetown briefly tied the game again at 9–9.
From there, Richmond delivered the knockout run.
Littlejohn put the Spiders back in front off a Picart assist midway through the quarter, and O'Neil followed with a goal to extend the lead to two. Littlejohn then completed his hat trick on a feed from O'Neil before Creo and Evan O'Neil scored back-to-back goals to cap a five-goal Richmond run that pushed the margin to 14–9.
Georgetown added a late goal in the final minute, but Richmond's six-goal fourth quarter surge proved the difference as the Spiders pulled away to remain unbeaten at 6–0.
Richmond begins it's Atlantic 10 conference slate next week when it hosts Delaware for Youth Day. Game time is set for 3:00 on Saturday, March 14.
