Spiders Fall to No. 11 Nebraska in NCAA First Four

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night, falling to Nebraska in the NCAA First Four, 75-56, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the loss, the Spiders close the year at 26-8, while the Cornhuskers advance to the NCAA Tournament First Round.

How It Happened
Maggie Doogan opened the scoring for Richmond, knocking down a three-pointer for the first bucket at the 8:34 mark. Nebraska answered with a layup on the other end before Alicia Newell converted at the free throw line to cut the deficit to one. The Cornhuskers added another basket to take a 7-4 lead, but Rachel Ullstrom responded with a layup before Ally Sweeney gave Richmond its first lead of the game, 8-7, with a jumper. Newell added another basket to cap a 6-0 Spider run and push Richmond ahead 10-7. Nebraska answered with six straight points to regain a 13-10 advantage before Sweeney stopped the run with a jumper. The Cornhuskers added a pair of three-pointers late in the quarter to extend the lead, taking a 19-14 edge into the second.
Aneisha Scott opened the second quarter at the line before Nebraska stretched its lead to seven. Richmond chipped away behind baskets from Scott and Doogan, while Rayne Wright converted an and-one to keep the Spiders within striking distance. Tierra Simon added a late bucket, and Richmond closed the half on a 6-0 run, capped by four straight free throws from Doogan and Simon, to trim the deficit to 34-32 at the break.
Nebraska seized control in the third quarter, opening the half on a 19-2 run to push the lead to 53-34. Doogan accounted for Richmond's only field goal during the stretch, but the Cornhuskers continued to build the margin behind efficient shooting. A late Sweeney layup and a basket from Ava Persichetti cut into the deficit, but Nebraska carried a 61-38 advantage into the fourth.
