WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The Richmond Spiders men's golf team settled down in Round 2 of the Metropolis Collegiate Monday afternoon after an unsteady start in Round 1 Monday morning. Richmond combined for a team score of 2-over par (282) in Round 2, best among the 15 teams in the field and a 15-shot improvement from its 297 (+15) in Round 1. With Tuesday's final round remaining, the Spiders are third on the team leaderboard at 19-over par (579), five shots behind North Dakota State and six behind 36-hole leader Siena.
Senior Drew Carlin led the Spiders on Monday with rounds of 74 (+4) and 70 (E) and is tied for 10th among the 84 players on the individual leaderboard. Carlin birdied four of his final five holes in Round 2, including each of the last two.
"I had a nice finish," said Carlin. "I stayed pretty patient and got it back to even. The course is tough so I think everyone realized par is a great score and that helped us settle down a bit."
Carlin is one shot of teammates junior Quin Polin, freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron, and junior Parker Moellinger, who's competing as in individual. Polin made 28 pars Monday, tied for second most in the field. Rizo-Patron led UR with a 2-under 68 in Round 2 after shooting a 7-over 77 in his first collegiate round Monday morning. Moellinger's 2-over 72 in Round 1 was the lowest round of his college career.
Sophomore Carson Baez is tied for 23rd at 7-over par (147), and junior Jack LaPiana is tied for 43rd at 11-over par.
Carlin, the sole senior on Richmond's roster, is seeking his first top-10 finish since February 2023 Tuesday.
"There are definitely big shoes to fill with Cole [Ekert] and Pat [Isztwan} being gone so we all knew we have to step up this year," said Carlin of his approach to his role as Richmond's most experienced team member.
Round 3 will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 AM Tuesday.
