Defense Powers Spiders To Road Win Over Wofford

Richmond, Va. – After being faced with a 90-minute weather delay pushing back kickoff, the University of Richmond football team emerged victorious on the road Saturday night, earning a 14-10 victory over Wofford.
Powered by a late touchdown from senior quarterback Kyle Wickersham and a dominant defensive effort, the Spiders earned their first win of the season. With the victory, Head Coach Russ Huesman tied Ed Merrick for the second-most wins in program history with 53.
"I told our guys before we left the hotel today, 'We've got to win this game up front defensively.' We've got to sack the quarterback, and we've got to pressure him," said Huesman.
And that they did.
Senior defensive end Camden Byrd recorded three tackles and two sacks for a total loss of 20 yards. Sophomore linebacker Peyton Seelmann added five tackles, one sack, and a pass breakup, while senior D'Angelo Stocker led the team with six total tackles. Matei Fitz (three tackles) and Donovan Hoilette (five tackles) also combined for a fourth Spiders sack.
"It's exciting, it's always exciting to get a win," said Byrd. "Of course, after last week we were disappointed, and we knew the things we needed to do to get a win. As a whole, we played our part, played hard, and came together as a team and got a win."
Richmond opened the game with a three-and-out before responding with its longest drive of the young season—an eight-play, 90-yard series capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Wickersham to sophomore running back Andrew King. Jayden Alsheskie added the extra point to give the Spiders a 7-0 lead at 7:12 in the first quarter.
The Richmond defense sacked Wofford quarterback Ethan Drumm four times as the Spiders held the Terriers to just 158 yards of total offense and 3.2 yards per play. The Spiders were dominant against the run, holding Wofford to just 47 yards on the ground all game. Drumm finished the day 12-of-25 for 111 yards and ran for a total of -34 yards on six carries.
Wofford's response to a stingy Spiders defense came late in the first quarter, when safety C.J. Coombs intercepted Wickersham and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
The Terriers missed a chance to take the lead before halftime when kicker Connor Deviney pushed a 34-yard field goal wide. In the third quarter, Wofford took a 10-7 lead on a 47-yard field goal by backup kicker Sam Spence at 11:03.
Byrd's second sack late in the third quarter on third down set up a Richmond possession that resulted in the game-winning score. The Spiders pieced together a nine-play, 54-yard drive capped by Wickersham's 10-yard touchdown run to take a 14-10 lead.
Wickersham finished 20-of-29 for 153 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and was not sacked as he was protected by a new-look offensive line. He also rushed for 78 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Senior wide receiver Quanye Veney led the Spiders with 42 receiving yards on three catches.
"We have to thank our defense for having our back all night, giving us good field position," said Wickersham. "The offensive line responded and did a heck of a job to open up those holes in the fourth quarter, and we were able to sustain some drives and run some time off the clock."
In the fourth quarter, the Spiders forced Wofford into a three-and-out before Richmond burned through 7:14 of game clock to punt the ball back to Wofford, where they would turn over the ball on downs as they made a last-ditch effort to find the end zone. Richmond got the ball back when Wickersham picked up a crucial 14-yard first down run on third-and-nine at Richmond's 36 to be able to kneel the ball out from there.
The Spiders are on the road for another week when they travel to North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Kenan Stadium.
