Stripling Scores First Goal; Spider Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to Dukes

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond scored first Friday night in a defensive battle against James Madison but fell in overtime to the Dukes(2-2), 2-1, at Crenshaw Field.
UR (1-2) heads on the road to face #17 Liberty on Sunday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+ before returning to Crenshaw Field to host Georgetown Friday, Sept. 12 for a 3 p.m. contest.
First half action saw just 11 shots between the two squads. Both squads had a single shot in the first quarter while UR picked up the offensive intensity in the second quarter firing off seven shots to JMU's two. Richmond also had the upper hand with six corners in the first half while holding the Dukes to just two.
Valen Luna Paratore took the Spiders first penalty stroke of the season in the 40th minute of action but was stopped by JMU's keeper. Luna Paratore led the Spiders with four shots, while Clara Larripa tallied three.
On the Spiders third penalty corner of the third quarter, Amy Stripling put Richmond on the board with a straight shot past the JMU goalkeeper to take the lead. Jess McMeeking started the penalty corner play, connecting with Camila Daud to make the stick stop and set up Stripling for the goal in the 41st minute of action.
James Madison tied the game in the 59th minute of action with a shot that was redirected into the upper right corner of the goal.
Richmond got three penalty corners in the overtime period but were unable to score. JMU got the game-winner in the 59th minute.
JMU finished with the advantage in shots, 19-14, including 10-8 on frame, while UR picked up more corners, 13-10.
