RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team has the honor of highlighting freshman Emma Newman as this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The honor marks the first weekly award of Newman's career and the first A-10 Rookie of the Week recognition for Spider Soccer since Emma Coleman earned the distinction on Sept. 13, 2021.
Newman a Mission Viejo, Calif. native, had a record-setting collegiate debut in Richmond's season-opening 5-0 win over VMI on Thursday. She tied the program's single-game record with four goals while adding an assist, finishing with nine points to lead the Spiders to the most goals in a season opener in program history and their first 5-0 win since Sept. 11, 2019, at Hampton. Newman fired off eight shots in the contest, including seven on goal, and tallied the game-winning strike.
The freshman continued her strong start on Sunday, registering four more shots with two on goal in a 1-0 setback to Coastal Carolina. Through two matches, Newman leads Richmond with four goals, nine points and 12 total shots.
The Spiders continue their homestand Thursday, welcoming East Carolina to campus for a 5 p.m. kickoff at President's Field, before heading on the road for the first time this season to take on Wofford on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
