RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal and dropped a 1-0 decision to Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at President's Field on Senior Day. The result marked the Spiders' first loss of 2025 as UR dropped to 1-1-0 on the year, while Coastal Carolina improved to 1-0-0.
Goal
7' – CCU: Tamlyn Parkes (assisted by Eleanor Ashton)
How it Happened
Coastal Carolina provided the breakthrough in the seventh minute when Eleanor Ashton connected with Tamlyn Parkes inside the box. Parkes slotted her shot past Spider keeper Veronica Rrapi to give the Chanticleers the early lead.
Richmond responded with sustained pressure after halftime, outshooting Coastal Carolina 8-2 in the second half and creating multiple chances from set pieces. The Spiders finished with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks, including four in the final 15 minutes as they pushed numbers forward in search of the equalizer.
Freshman Emma Newman, coming off her record-tying four-goal debut Thursday against VMI, paced the Spider attack again with four shots, two of them on frame. Graduate Brigitte Bussiere tallied two shots on goal, while senior Kiley Fitzgerald and junior Sydney Bortz also forced saves from CCU goalkeeper Aris Lamanna.
Lamanna kept the Spiders off the board with six saves in her first start of the year. On the other end, Rrapi posted three saves in her second collegiate appearance, including key stops in the 37th and 73rd minutes to keep Richmond within striking distance. The Spider back line, anchored by junior Gwen Howell, held Coastal Carolina to just seven shots overall and only two after halftime, but the early strike held up as the game-winner.
Notes on the Game
Richmond continues its season-opening homestand Thursday, Aug. 21, as UR plays host to East Carolina at 5 p.m. at President's Field. UR then hits the road for the first time in 2025, traveling to Wofford for a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Aug. 24.
