RICHMOND, Va. — Following a historic junior season in a Richmond women's basketball uniform, Maggie Doogan has been invited to compete at the 2025 USA Basketball Women's AmeriCup Team Trials, held June 17 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, USA Basketball announced on Monday.
Doogan is one of 21 athletes selected nationwide to attend the trials and one of just seven making her USA Basketball debut. The trials will determine the roster for the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, set for June 28–July 6 in Santiago, Chile.
"I'm so grateful for this opportunity to play with some of the best players and learn from some of the best coaches in the country," Doogan said. "I'm even more excited to represent Richmond on a national level. Making a run in March Madness already put us on the map, but being able to show off the school in this way is such an honor."
The Broomall, Pa., native is coming off one of the most decorated seasons in program history. Doogan was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year — the first in Richmond history — and helped lead the Spiders to their first NCAA Tournament win. She averaged a career-best 17.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 55.5 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from three.
"Maggie had a tremendous season, especially during our NCAA Tournament run," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "To see that culminate with an opportunity with USA Basketball is well deserved and will be an incredible experience. I could not be happier for her and know she will impress everyone at the trials and hopefully even continue on with the national team."
Roussell is also receiving national recognition this summer, having been selected as a court coach for the 2025 USA Basketball Women's U19 National Team trials, also held in Colorado Springs. He will work with the country's top junior talent as they prepare for the 2025 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup.
Doogan, a 2025 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year semifinalist, scored in double figures in 32 of 35 games and totaled 596 points, 250 rebounds and 133 assists on the year. She was also named to the All-ECAC First Team, Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Academic Team, and the CSC Academic All-District Team.
"This is such a huge moment for Richmond Women's Basketball," Roussell added. "Maggie's invitation shines a light on everyone associated with the program."
For Doogan, the opportunity is as much about growth as it is competition.
"On a personal level, I want to go in with an open mind and learn as much as I can," Doogan said. "This is such a unique experience, and I want to take advantage of every opportunity. I just hope to get better and gain new skills that will help my team succeed this season."
The 2025 USA Women's AmeriCup Team will open Group B play in Chile against the host nation, followed by matchups with Colombia, Puerto Rico and Mexico. The tournament champion will earn a berth to the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin.
