AUGUSTA, Ga. — Richmond finds itself in 12th place after two rounds against some of the nation's top teams Saturday at the Haskins Award Invitational. UR is at 14-over par (590), 12th in a 15-team field that includes seven of the nation's top 40 teams at Forest Hills Golf Club.
"We struggled with the course more than the stage," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "We are more than capable of being more competitive."
Richmond combined for a 9-over 297 in Round 1 Saturday morning and added a 5-over 293 in Round 2 Saturday afternoon. At 14-over par, the Spiders are one shot in front of Kennsaw State, four shots behind Rutgers, and 25 shots behind 36-hole leaders Illinois. UR made nothing worse than a bogey in Round 2 after carding four double bogeys in Round 1.
"If you get in the wrong position it's very difficult to save a par," said Decker. "Tomorrow our goal is to keep the ball in the proper position on the approach shots."
Freshman Carson Baez (+3) is the top Spider on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 35th among the 78 golfers in the field. Sophomores Jack LaPiana and Quin Polin are tied for 44th at 4-over par (148), one shot in front of senior Cole Ekert, who's tied for 54th. Fellow senior Patrick Isztwan is tied for 66th at 9-over par (153).
"It's great to compete with some of the best teams in the country. We are excited to get back after it tomorrow," said Decker.
Richmond will begin Sunday's final round at 8:45 AM off the 10th tee.
