Spider Baseball Splits Saturday Twin Bill with UMass

With the game one victory, head coach Mik Aoki collected his 50th victory at the helm of the Spider Baseball program in his second season. UR moves to 23-10 on the season and 6-8 in league play. UMass goes to 10-18-1 on the year and 4-10 in conference action.
The series finale is set for Sunday, April 13 at Pitt Field with first pitch at noon on ESPN+.
Richmond game one starter Esteban Rodriguez overcame allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk in the first inning to collect his second victory of the season. Rodriguez finished his outing allowing one more hit, two walks and struck out three for a full six innings on the mound.
Ryan Bilka picked up his first save of the season after throwing three scoreless frames, allowing a walk and a hit batter while striking out four.
In the bottom of the first, Jordan Jaffe hit a sacrifice fly to score Phil Bernstein from third after he reached on a double and advanced to third on a UMass error.
In the second, Richmond took a 4-3 lead on four singles. DJ Pacheco scored the first run of the inning on Aaron Whitley's base hit. Bernstein's base hit to right center scored Joey Wilga and Whitley.
Michael Elko's sharp base hit to left to score Jack Arcamone in the third gave Richmond a 5-3 lead. Whitley's second RBI base hit of the game in the fifth knocked out UMass' starting pitcher.
Richmond added three insurance runs in the eighth. Jaffe doubled down the right field line, scoring Whitley. Bernstein, after reaching on a walk, scored on Arcamone's sacrifice fly. Jaffe then scored on Brady O'Brien's sacrifice fly.
In game two, Richmond scored two runs in the first on two hits and a UMass error. Whitley scored the first run with Jaffe at the plate. Jaffe then scored on O'Brien's double down the right field line.
UMass jumped on Richmond starter Gerry Peacock in the third inning. Peacock tossed two scoreless frames, striking out two in the first and getting a double play to work around a hit batter and a single in the second. In the third, UMass rattled off four straight singles and a double to take a 4-2 lead and push Peacock out of the game. UMass tallied one more run off UR reliever Chase Topolski.
Jaffe scored on Arcamone's double to right center in the third to get a run back in the third inning.
In the fourth, Richmond tied the game at five-all, scoring two runs on a UMass error, two walks and a hit by pitch.
UMass took the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a walk, hit batter and a base hit off Topolski. The Minutemen added a run in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Bernstein doubled in Whitley in the bottom of the ninth for the Spiders sixth run of the game.
