Spiders Down High Point On Senior Day To Remain Undefeated in Conference Action
04/12/2025 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va. — Both No. 11/12 Richmond and High Point entered Saturday's men's lacrosse matchup at Robins Stadium undefeated in Atlantic 10 conference play, but only one would leave with that mark intact as Richmond came out on top with an 11-6 win on Senior Day. With the win, Richmond claimed sole possession of first place in the A-10 standings with two weeks to go in the regular season and extended its all-time series lead over High Point to 15-4.
The game began slowly on the offensive side for both teams, taking nearly nine minutes for the first goal to be scored, with High Point striking first to take an early 1-0 lead. Richmond quickly answered, however, launching a three-goal run. Gavin Creo got the Spiders on the board off a feed from Joe Sheridan at the 3:56 mark of the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Aidan O'Neil added an unassisted goal at 2:41. The run continued into the second quarter as Lukas Olsson scored at 12:54 to give Richmond a 3-1 lead.
High Point managed to respond with two goals in the second quarter, scoring at 9:19 and 5:50. But each was answered by Richmond. O'Neil added his second of the game during that stretch, and Lucas Littlejohn scored off an assist from Henry Alpaugh to give the Spiders a 5-3 edge at halftime. Throughout the game, High Point never managed to string together back-to-back goals, as Richmond's defense consistently held firm.
Coming out of the break, Sheridan scored his first of the day just 34 seconds into the third quarter. The next goal didn't come until the 6:22 mark, when O'Neil connected with Littlejohn for another Richmond tally. High Point added a goal at 3:16 in the third, but Richmond again answered with a pair—this time from Daniel Picart and long-stick midfielder Tommy Stull, assisted by O'Neil—to stretch the lead to 9-4.
The Panthers scored again early in the fourth at 13:14, narrowing the deficit to four. But, as was the case all game, Richmond answered with two more. Max Merklinger scored off a pass from Creo, and Olsson added his second of the afternoon to give the Spiders their largest lead at 11-5. High Point added a final goal at 3:08, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.
Despite going just 7-for-21 on faceoffs, Richmond's defense made the difference, holding High Point to its second-lowest goal total of the season. Mitchell Dunham led the defensive effort with six ground balls and five caused turnovers, matching his season-high set at the Georgetown game.
High Point turned the ball over 20 times—13 of which were caused by Richmond—and five came on failed clears, as the Panthers went 19-of-24. Richmond, meanwhile, was nearly perfect on clears, completing 22-of-23 attempts and committing only seven turnovers overall. Both teams picked up 26 ground balls, but Richmond held a clear edge in shots, outshooting High Point 43-25.
In goal, Zach Vigue made seven saves for Richmond, while High Point's goalkeeper was busy with 16 stops.
With the win, Richmond improves to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in A-10 play and will close out its regular-season home schedule next Saturday, April 19, when it hosts UMass at noon.
