Spiders Second After Round 1 in Alabama
03/09/2025 | Women's Golf
GADSDEN, Ala. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team is in second place on the team leaderboard following the first of three rounds in the Chris Banister Golf Classic at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes. UR posted a team score of 22-over par (310) Sunday, behind only host Jacksonville State (+10) among the seven teams in the field.
The Spiders were led by junior Hannah Lydic, who bounced back from a double bogey-bogey start to make five birdies on the final six holes of her front nine en route to a 2-over 74. Lydic is currently third among 43 golfers on the individual leaderboard, two shots behind co-leaders Paula Perez Cubinas (Jacksonville State) and Gabi Nicastro (Samford).
"I was able to take my time and put all my effort and focus into my process going into each shot. This is something I've been working on the past month and it's cool to see that focus paying off," said Lydic. "We've been really attacking the putting in our practices at [Independence Golf Club] and that's paying off here as well."
Freshman Katie Magner is also in the top 10. She's tied for eighth after a 4-over 76 in the opening round.
Richmond also counted scores from junior Olivia Wilkie (7-over 79) and sophomore Maya Beasley (9-over 81) Sunday as the field battled chilly temperatures and strong winds.
Wilkie is tied for 17th and Beasley is tied for 25th, respectively, while senior Christine Mandile is 35th at 12-over par (84).
Three Spiders are competing as individuals in the event. Freshman Caroline Thompson led that group with a 4-over 76 Sunday, while senior Lauren Jones shot 79 (+7). Sophomore Heather Appelson was just behind at 9-over par (81).
Round 2 will begin at 11:30 AM ET Monday.
