
Mercyhurst No Match For Spiders Tuesday Afternoon

Richmond, Va. – Division I men's lacrosse's newest program struggled to keep up with Richmond on Tuesday afternoon, as the Spiders dominated Mercyhurst, 23-3. The 20-goal margin of victory marked the largest in program history.
A total of 18 Spiders recorded points as Richmond cleared its bench, with all eligible field players and three goalies seeing game action. The 35 total points (23 goals, 12 assists) tied for the sixth-most in a single game for the Spiders.
Freshman Porter Barnett had a standout performance with five points, including three goals and two assists. Leo Caine added four goals, while Max Merklinger contributed three goals and an assist.
Also scoring for the Spiders were Aidan O'Neil, Lucas Littlejohn, Joe Sheridan (2), Daniel Picart, Lukas Olsson, Ryan Spilman, Gavin Creo (2), Lucas Slate (assist), Evan O'Neil, Brayden Penafeather-Stevenson, and Jack Dougherty (assist). Evan Leonardo, Chris Mazzaferri, Henry Alpaugh, Jack Ricciardi, Aidan Wooley, Jared Chenoy, and Drew Tenzer all registered assists.
Richmond played a "make it take it" style, firing off 56 shots, the sixth-most in program history, and won 25 of 30 faceoffs to maintain possession throughout. On the defensive end, Zach Vigue started in goal and made two saves, while Brody Murphy (10:11) and Carson Quinn (6:58) also saw time in cage. Each goalie allowed one goal.
The Spiders scooped 44 ground balls, tying for the sixth-most in a single game, led by faceoff specialists Chenoy (8-of-11) and Anthony DiCenso (9-of-10), each collecting seven. Trent Grainger won 5-of-6 faceoffs, while midfielder Matt Jacobsen was perfect on his three attempts.
Richmond also totaled nine caused turnovers, with Mitchell Dunham leading the way with three.
The Spiders return to Robins Stadium this Saturday to face UMBC at 11:30 a.m.
