RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Spiders took home three of a possible four awards in the first weekly Atlantic 10 golf honors of the spring season, the conference announced Tuesday. Carson Baez was named Men's Golf Rookie of the Week, Cole Ekert was named Men's Golfer of the Week, sharing the award with Davidson's Josh Stewart, and Olivia Wilkie was named Women's Golfer of the Week.
Baez and Ekert were honored for their performances at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz., from Feb. 16-18, which was won by the Spiders with a team score of 29-under par, the lowest tournament score in program history.
Ekert tied for second at the event with a score of 12-under par (204). It was Ekert's sixth career top-two finish and his second straight in a stroke-play event after he placed second at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic in October. He finished one stroke behind his program record tournament score of 13-under par at the 2023 VCU Shootout. This is Ekert's second A-10 Men's Golfer of the Week Award this season (Nov. 14).
Baez tied for 13th at the Loyola Intercollegiate, his fifth straight top-20 result in stroke play dating back to the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational in October. After opening with a 1-over 73 in Round 1, he shot back-to-back 3-under 69s in Rounds 2 and 3 to finish at 5-under par. This is Baez's fourth straight A-10 Men's Golf Rookie of the Week honor after he won the final three awards of the fall season.
Wilkie was named A-10 Women's Golfer of the Week after leading Richmond to a tie for fourth, its best finish of the season, at the RiverTowne Invitational in Charleston, S.C. on Feb. 17-18. Wilkie placed fifth on the individual leaderboard at 2-over par (218), recording the second top-five finish of her career and her first since placing third at the 2022 Patriot League Championship. Wilkie's 2-over par score for the event matched the lowest of her career and equaled the 16th best individual tournament score in program history.
Richmond men's golf will next compete at the Sea Palms Invitational at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga. from March 13-15.
Richmond women's golf will return to action at the Chris Banister Golf Classic at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes in Gadsden, Ala. from March 9-11.
