RICHMOND, Va. – Brady O'Brien hit three multi-run home runs Saturday at Pitt Field, but it wasn't enough to complete the Richmond baseball team's comeback against Fordham, falling 15-11 in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
Richmond, 21-6 and 4-4 in league play, and Fordham, 13-14 and 6-2 in conference play, return to Pitt Field for the A-10 series finale Sunday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
The Rams jumped out to a quick lead on Spiders starter Chase Topolski, tagging him for five runs on seven hits and a hit batter with two strikeouts over two and a third of an inning.
Richmond got on the board in the first as Aaron Whitley, who doubled to start the frame, scored on Jordan Jaffe's ground out.
Fordham posted a six run fourth, taking an 11-1 lead, on five hits, two walks and a Spider miscue. O'Brien launched his first two-run home run of the day to center field in the bottom of the fourth. Cole Palmeri picked up Michael Elko with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 11-4.
In the fifth, Jack Arcamone doubled in two runs before O'Brien hit his second two-run home run in as many innings, putting the Spiders within four runs, 12-8. Richmond finally knocked out the Fordham starter as all nine position players batted in the frame.
Fordham got three runs in the sixth to take a 13-8 lead. After both squads were held scoreless for two innings, O'Brien launched his third home run, a three-run shot to left center in the bottom of the eighth to put the Spiders within four runs, 15-11. O'Brien is now third on the team with six home runs and 33 RBI this season.
Josh Willitts made his season debut in the ninth, throwing in a game for the first time since February of 2023 after "Tommy John" surgery. Willitts retired the Rams in order, striking out two.
