DANBURY, Conn. – Head Coach Aaron Roussell was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Coach of the Year following a historic season leading the University of Richmond women's basketball team to unprecedented success. Under Roussell's leadership, Richmond concluded its 2024-25 campaign by securing its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, defeating No. 9 Georgia Tech in the first round, before advancing to the NCAA Second Round for the first time in program history.
Roussell, who also earned back-to-back Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors, guided Richmond to a 28-7 overall record, including a dominant 17-1 mark in conference play. The Spiders finished with the highest NET ranking among Atlantic 10 teams at 33. Richmond ended the regular season on a program-best 16-game win streak, pushing the win streak to 17-straight games before falling to Saint Joseph's by one point in the A-10 Championship semifinal. Additionally, the Spiders extended their home conference win streak to 24-straight games dating back to Jan. 1, 2023.
In addition to Roussell's recognition, junior forward Maggie Doogan was selected to the All-ECAC First Team after a standout junior campaign. Doogan, a Broomall, Pa., native, was previously named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, the first Spider to earn the honor in the A-10 and the program's first since Pam Bryant won back-to-back CAA Player of the Year awards in 1989 and 1990.
Doogan was instrumental in Richmond's NCAA Tournament run, delivering a standout performance against No. 9 Georgia Tech with 30 points, 15 rebounds and six assists to lead the Spiders to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win. She followed that effort with 27 points and six boards against No. 1 UCLA, a key factor in the matchup against the nation's top-ranked team. For the season, Doogan led Richmond with 17 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 55.5 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from three, and 78.5 percent from the free-throw line. She ranked third in the A-10 in scoring, second in field goal percentage, fourth in free throw percentage, and was a top-10 leader in rebounding, assists and blocks.
A three-time A-10 Player of the Week (Dec. 9, 2024, Jan. 13, 2025, Feb. 24, 2025), Doogan reached double figures in 31 of Richmond's 35 games, including a career-high 37-point outing against George Mason and a 33-point performance at VCU. She surpassed 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds this season, becoming just the fourth Spider in program history to achieve the feat in three seasons. Additionally, Doogan was named a World Exposure Report National Player of the Week (Feb. 24, 2025), earned two spots in the NCAA.com National Starting Lineup, and was a semifinalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
