ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Senior Patrick Isztwan fired a 5-under 66 to help the Spiders shoot to third place after Round 1 at the 54-hole Sea Palms Invitational Thursday. Isztwan birdied five of his final eight holes to shoot the lowest round in his Spiders career, which spans 16 events and 43 competitive rounds.
"I was able to keep it in play all day which was important," said Isztwan. "I stayed patient on the front and started to get some putts to fall on the back."
Isztwan is tied for fourth in the field of 120 golfers, while the Spiders sit in third place among the 20 teams on the leaderboard. Richmond (6-under 278) is one shot behind A-10 rival Davidson and 10 behind UNCG, who is at 16-under par (268).
Freshman Carson Baez is the only other Spider in red figures. He's tied for 18th at 1-under par (70).
Senior Cole Ekert battled back from a triple bogey on the 10th hole to shoot an even-par 71. He and sophomore Jack LaPiana are tied for 27th at even par.
Sophomore Quin Polin is tied for 65th at 3-over par (74), one shot behind junior Drew Carlin, who's competing as an individual and is tied for 53rd.
UR led the field in par-3 performance Thursday at a combined 1-under par.
