Spiders Shoot to Share of Lead at Chris Banister Classic
03/10/2025 | Women's Golf
GADSDEN, Ala. — Richmond carded the low round of the day Monday with a team score of 11-over par (299) to shoot to the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes remaining in the Chris Banister Golf Classic at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes. The Spiders will enter Tuesday's final round tied with host Jacksonville State for first place at 33-over par (609). Both teams are 18 shots clear of third-place Samford (+51, 627), with the rest of the seven-team field further behind.
The Spiders were led by sophomore Maya Beasley, whose even-par 72 in Round 2 was two strokes better than any other golfer in the field Monday. Beasley played her first eight holes in three-under par and held on during a difficult closing stretch.
"The wind really picked up on the back nine, and the last three holes were pretty crazy conditions wise today so pars felt awesome," said Beasley. "I think staying patient and in the moment is extremely important on this course."
Beasley (9-over 153) is currently tied with teammate Hannah Lydic for fifth place on the individual leaderboard, just behind Spiders freshman Katie Magner, who is in fourth place at 8-over par (152).
Junior Olivia Wilkie is tied for 11th at 11-over par (155) and senior Christine Mandile is tied for 17th at 15-over par (159).
Three Spiders are competing in the event as individuals, with freshman Caroline Thompson leading that group at 20-over par (tied for 27th), just in front of senior Lauren Jones and sophomore Heather Appelson, who are tied for 32nd at 21-over par.
Tee times for Tuesday's third and final round will begin at 8 AM local time, 9 AM EST. The Spiders will be seeking their first team title since winning the 2024 RiverTowne Invitational 13 months ago.
"We have talked a lot about committing to your shot so that's is going to be the message in the morning," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow.
