GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Richmond combined for a team score of 9-under par in Round 2 of the Loyola Intercollegiate Monday and will enter Tuesday's final round at 20-under par, seven shots in front of second-place Boise State.
The Spiders were led by senior Cole Ekert, who fired a 5-under 67 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Round 2 and sits at 9-under par, one shot off the individual lead held by Marshall's Ryan Bilby and Boise State's Cole Rueck.
"I think I stayed in the present moment well today," said Ekert. "I made a couple silly bogeys early with wedges and bounced back nicely from those. Purely focusing on the shot at hand has really helped me be more intentional with every shot and avoid a longer string of mistakes."
Sophomore Quin Polin is also in the top 10 on the leaderboard at 5-under par, tied for seventh.
Freshman Carson Baez jumped 25 spots on the leaderboard Monday with a 3-under 69, finishing the day tied for 20th at 2-under par.
Junior Drew Carlin is tied for 34th at even-par, and senior Patrick Isztwan is tied for 57th at 3-over par.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Jack LaPiana is tied for 50th at 2-over par.
In addition to Richmond (-20) and Boise State (-13), the only other teams under par are Loyola Maryland (-11), Tennessee-Martin (-10), Middle Tenneseee (-7), Gonzaga (-3), and South Dakota (-1) in the 19-team field.
"I think collectively, we're giving ourselves a ton of birdie opportunities especially on the par 5s," said Ekert. "We're -23 as a team on the Par 5s, so continuing to take advantage of those and hitting some wedges close on the shorter par 4s will be key for us to keep chugging tomorrow."
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:45 AM ET.
