RICHMOND, Va. – Despite an early first-half goal from Kelly Hutton, the University of Richmond women's soccer team conceded a pair of second-half goals to drop a 2-1 decision to visiting American Sunday afternoon at President's Field. With the setback, the Spiders fell to 2-3-1 on the year while the Eagles improved to 4-1-1.
Goals
'14 – UR: Kelly Hutton (assisted by Brigitte Bussiere)
'54 – AU: Jennifer McGuire (assisted by Izzy Kadzban)
'89 – AU: Lauren Saunders (assisted by Lailah Stewart and Avery Klingensmith)
How it Happened
Richmond started the match hot, as Bussiere posted a shot in the seventh minute before Hutton chipped in a ball sent in by Bussiere past the Eagle keeper for a 1-0 Spider lead. American would post back-to-back shots in the 30th minute but wouldn't be able to find the equalizer heading into the second half.
The Eagles got a shot off early in the second half, but the Spider defense corralled the offensive pressure. After a scramble in the box, the Eagles were able to find the equalizer in the 54th minute. Marisa Snee would have a look in the 72nd minute, but would sail left of the goal. Both teams exchanged bouts of possession until the 89th minute, where another scramble inside the box found the foot of an Eagle striker, who slotted the ball past McKenna Dalfonso for the 2-1 Eagle win.
Notes on the Game
"We didn't do as well as we wanted to especially with the ball in an intense game in against a good team," Denton said. "We couldn't reel in many second-half opportunities. We had some moments early in the second half, but we didn't handle the ball well in the closing minutes."
