05/06/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va. – 10 years, three conferences, nine conference title games and five trips to the NCAA tournament. That's Richmond Lacrosse.
The Spiders earned its fifth trip to the NCAA tournament Saturday after blowing past rival High Point, 15-8, in the first-ever Atlantic 10 Men's Lacrosse championship.
Richmond goals were scored by Lance Madonna (4 assists), Dalton Young (1 assist), Derrek Madonna, Luke Grayum and Henry Alpaugh with two each, while Tommy Stull, Jake Kapp, Max Merklinger, Jared Chenoy and Lukas Olsson with one each. Joe Sheridan also added an assist.
The last tie of the game came at the 3:53 mark of the first when High Point scored to lock things at two apiece. From there, the Spiders opened wide on the Panthers outscoring them 13-6 over the following three quarters to earn the title.
Up 6-3 at the half, Richmond came out the break and unleashed on the High Point defense, scoring six goals including three within the first four minutes of the quarter to squander any Panther momentum and run away handedly with the win.
Defensively, Zach Vigue put on a show with 15 saves while Jack Pilling and Tommy Stull came up with two caused turnovers.
With the win, Richmond went 9-0 to pull off an undefeated season at Robins Stadium for just the second time in program history.
After the game, six Spiders were named to the All-Tournament team in Derrek Madonna, Tommy Stull, Jake Saunders, Lance Madonna, Zach Vigue and Most Outstanding Player Dalton Young.
The Spiders will find out their NCAA tournament matchup tomorrow night during the NCAA Div. I Men's Lacrosse Selection Show set for 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
