Men’s Lacrosse Takes Down Hampton In SoCon Opener

HAMPTON, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse team remained perfect all-time in program history in Southern Conference openers as the Spiders won the first game for the seventh-straight season with a dominant 20-5 victory over hosting Hampton Saturday. The game marks the first and last meeting for the Spiders against Hampton in SoCon play as the Pirates entered the league for the 2022 season but move to the Colonial Athletic Association for 2023.
The Spiders improve to 36-6 all-time in SoCon play in their eighth season in the league. Richmond's 36 wins are seven more than any other program in league history. The 20 goals scored are the most this season for the Spiders and tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history.
Twelve different Spiders scored in the victory with junior attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) leading the way with a game-high four goals. Redshirt senior attack Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) posted a career-high seven points, scoring two goals and adding five assists.
Freshman Lukas Olsson (Calgary, Alberta) scored the first points of his career, notching two goals and adding two assists. Freshman Brendan Murphy (Berwyn, Pa.) added the first two goals of his career while redshirt sophomore Kieran Laurie (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also notched the first goal of his career.
The Spiders scored the game's first three goals and ran out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Young posted a hat trick in the opening 12:07 of the game while graduate Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) scored the third goal of the game, running his point scoring streak to 51-straight games.
Richmond out-scored Hampton 7-1 in the second quarter, taking a 13-3 lead into the halftime break. The Spiders continued to add to their lead in the second half, posting seven more goals, three in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter.
The Spiders dominated play at the face-off dot, winning 21-of-29. Freshman Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won 6-of-7 while senior Nate Garlow (Syracuse, N.Y.) won a career-high 9-of-11.
Richmond returns to action next Saturday when it plays its final non-conference game of the regular season welcoming in No. 2 Virginia. Game time is set for noon at Robins Stadium. A ticket purchase is required for admission and can be purchased at www.richmondspiders.com or calling 1-877-Spider1.
