GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team defeated UNC Greensboro 5-2 Sunday afternoon in the team's second match in two days. All five Spiders won their singles match to help the team improve to 2-5 this season while the Spartans drop to 1-4.
"Today was an impressive battle and the team showed incredible fitness," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "We played back-to-back matches, and no one let up or looked tired."
The tandem of Carly Cohen and Marta Buendia won 6-4 on doubles court two, but Richmond lost doubles court one 6-4 and UNCG won by default on court three to snag the doubles point.
After that, however, the only other point the Spartans would get in the match came by default on court six singles.
Emily Dunbar and Cohen each took their opponent down quickly in straight sets on courts one and two, respectively, and Helene Heiberg would withstand a grueling two-and-a-half-hour outing on court three en route to a 7-5, 7-5 win.
Sara Salemyr took a first-set tiebreaker on court four and went on to win 7-6, 6-0. On court five, Buendia battled for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
