RICHMOND, Va. – For second straight year, the most recent academic data from the NCAA shows that 96 percent of Richmond student-athletes successfully earned their undergraduate degrees. The NCAA released its annual student-athlete graduation success rate ("GSR") survey Tuesday, detailing the percent of student-athletes entering college between 2012-15 to graduate, per the most recent statistics released by the Department of Education.
The GSR differs from the federal graduation-rate formula in that the GSR factors in transfer students who go on to graduate at a different institution and does not penalize schools for transfers who leave in good academic standing. As a whole, 90 percent of all NCAA Division I student-athletes across the country are earning their degrees. The Spiders are well above the national average at 96 percent.
Eleven of Richmond's 17 varsity sport programs achieved percent 100 percent GSR ratings: baseball, field hockey, men's cross country, men's golf, soccer, swimming & diving, women's cross country, women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's indoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field. All 17 programs achieved GSR ratings of 86 percent or higher.
Each spring, the NCAA releases a separate set of data, called the Academic Progress Rate (APR), which measures both academic performance and retention. Each program receives an APR score, with teams falling under a certain threshold subject to penalties such as loss of scholarships and postseason bans.
In the latest round of APR data, released in June, five Richmond programs were honored with Public Recognition Awards for being in the top 10 percent of their sport programs across Division I: men's cross country, women's cross country, women's track & field, women's golf and women's swimming & diving.
