CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond soccer team opened the 2021 fall season with a daunting challenge against the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers Thursday night. The Cavaliers scored three goals in the first half, and five over the final 45 minutes as the Spiders fell by a 8-0 margin at Klöckner stadium. The fourth-ranked Cavaliers open the season 1-0, as the Spiders fall to 0-1.
"Tonight we faced one of the most potent attacks in the country." Said head coach Marty Beall, "I'm really proud of how hard our girls competed tonight. We went into the game to find pressing moments and not just sit back and absorb their attacks. There were definitely moments we executed really well, but clearly there were moments Virginia executed at a very high level in the attacking third and scored some great goals. This is a game we will learn from and grow from."
The Cavaliers first scored in the third minute of action as Rebecca Jarrett scored unassisted. Jarrett followed with a dish to Hopkins who found the netting for a second goal in the 22nd minute The third goal came in the 27th minute of the contest from Diana Ordonez. Five Virginia goals were scored in the second half, by four different Cavaliers.
Richmond was led by Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) offensively. Wierman registered the Spiders' lone shot in the contest, a shot on goal off of a free kick in the first half.
Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) recorded seven saves in the contest, playing 47 minutes in goal. Taylor Montague (Durham, N.C.) registered five saves of her own 43 minutes of action.
Richmond returns to the pitch next Thursday as they'll head to College Park, Md. for a matchup with the Maryland Terrapins at 4:30 p.m.
