
Richmond Sweeps Singles To Earn 6-1 Win Against Saint Joseph’s

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and responded with a sweep in singles to earn a comeback 6-1 win against Saint Joseph's Friday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (6-8, 3-1 A-10) started the match slow falling in all three doubles matches. Saint Joseph's came out aggressive earning a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Eshan Kanetkar and Nathan Perrone won against freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.).
The Hawks clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles as Alex MacNeil and Johnnie Massart defeated Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) and Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.).
In the final doubles match, junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) fell short against Nickolas Frisk and Francesco Mowrey at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Wernink tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-sets win against Mowrey, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Walsh won in straight sets against Kanetkar, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to give UR a 2-1 lead.
Kliebhan gave UR a 3-1 lead after a 6-2, 7-6 win against Frisk at No. 2 singles. Erwin won a second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2) to clinch the match against Massart at No. 5 singles. Erwin won in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (2).
At No. 1 singles, Fernandez went the distance winning against Perrone, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to give Richmond their sixth point of the match. Fernandez forced a third set by winning 6-4 and held on in the third 6-4.
In the final match, Keitelman won a third set thriller against Janko, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Keitelman was trailing 4-5 in the third set before winning the final three games to complete the sweep in singles.
Richmond will prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus from April 29-May 2.
