RICHMOND, Va. – The 20th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in Southern Conference play and 33-5 all-time in league action Friday evening as the Spiders turned in their best all-around performance of the year in a 17-10 victory over rival High Point at Robins Stadium.
The Spiders' defense limited the Panthers to just 10 goals, which was High Point's second-lowest scoring total of the year. The Spiders forced 14 turnovers as a team and picked up 31 ground balls in the defensive effort. Graduate long-stick midfielder Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) tallied six ground balls and three caused turnovers while junior defender Jake Saunders (Oakville, Ontario) added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Junior face-off specialist Andrew Hamilton (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) won 18-of-31 face-offs and finished with seven ground balls in the win. Graduate goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) finished the game with 13 saves and a .565 save percentage.
Offensively, the Spiders out-shot High Point by a 50-34 margin. Sophomore attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) continued his dominant play in SoCon action scoring a game-high six goals and adding two assists. In the first three SoCon games this year, Young has scored 16 goals and dished out three assists. He posted six goals against VMI, four against VMI and six more Friday.
Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) also stayed hot, scoring seven points on the strength of three goals and four more assists. Lanchbury, the reigning National Player of the Week, has posted 26 points in the first three league games, scoring 10 goals and dishing out 16 assists in SoCon play.
Junior Jack Delligatti (Summerfield, N.C.) and senior Brett Randall (Brighton, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals as eight different Spiders found the back of the net.
Richmond (4-3, 3-0 SoCon) started strong defensively keeping the Panthers off the board over the first 11 minutes of the game. The Spiders scored the game's first three goals in a span of 1:10 taking a 3-0 lead at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter. Freshman Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the game's first goal before Delligatti and Lanchbury found the back of the net.
High Point (2-5, 1-1 SoCon) scored the next goal but the Spiders answered with five in a row, taking an 8-1 lead and forcing HPU into a timeout. Randall scored two in the stretch while Young scored his first goal of the game, beating the shot clock on a possession by a half of a second.
Young scored two more before the half as the Spiers took a 10-4 lead into the locker room. High Point made a run in the third quarter, scoring three straight to narrow the gap to 12-8 heading into the fourth quarter. The Spiders scored six seconds into the fourth quarter though to squash the momentum as Hamilton won a face-off and found Lanchbury for the quick goal.
After a goal by Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) the Spiders pulled away in the fourth as Young scored three more, including the final two of the evening to put the game out of reach.
Asher Nolting was one of three Panthers to score two goals in the game as he finished with a team-high three points. Parker Green made 17 saves in the loss for High Point, posting a .500 save percentage.
The Spiders step out of SoCon play next week when they travel to No. 9 Virginia Saturday evening. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in Charlottesville and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
