RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team played for the second time in 24 hours on Saturday morning, but the Spiders could not complete the weekend sweep, falling 4-1 to A-10 foe Dayton at the VCU Bubble.
"That was a tough team we played today," head coach Houston Barrick said. "I thought our guys just didn't quite respond how they needed to in the big moments. Dayton is a very experienced team and it showed today."
Seniors Caleb Troy and James Aronson defeated Zach Berry and Carsten Fisher on the No. 1 doubles court, 6-4, but the Flyers won on courts 2 and 3 to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Dayton carried its momentum into singles play, posting wins on courts 1 through 3 to clinch the team win.
"I knew it was going to be difficult for our us to match their intensity coming off of such a dramatic match yesterday, but I was hoping we would be able to play a little bit better than we did," Barrick added.
Aronson scored the lone point for the Spiders on the day, taking down Dayton's Theodor Jener, 6-4, 6-1, to move to 2-0 in singles action on the weekend.
"I couldn't be prouder of the weekend James and Caleb had," Barrick said. "Caleb had a tough match today, but those guys showed why they're our leaders. With how much youth we have on the team, those two play such an important role, and they stepped up big this weekend."
The Spiders return to action on Thursday, February 1, when they travel to Williamsburg to face William & Mary. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.
