SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three hundred and one student-athletes earned spots on the 2015 Spring Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Friday.
Richmond, an associate Southern Conference member for men's lacrosse, placed three student-athletes on the list.
Spider sophomore Ryan Berning (Cincinnati, Ohio) and seniors Rob Poirier (Wausau, Wisconsin) and Sean Robins (Lower Gwynedd, Pensylvania), all earned SoCon All-Academic honors.
Berning played the first seven games of the season before suffering injury, and collected three ground balls and caused a turnover on Richmond's stingy defensive unit. Poirier had an assist, collected 10 ground balls and forced four turnovers in 15 games. He missed only one game in the first two seasons of Spiders lacrosse. Robins was another member of the vaunted Spider defense who played in 12 games for the Spiders, causing a turnover and grabbing four ground balls. He has appeared in all but six of the program's 33 total games.
The spring academic all-conference team honors the sports of baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and men's and women's tennis.
Each of the SoCon's 10 full-member institutions had at least nine honorees, while associate lacrosse members, eligible for the team for the first time this year, accounted for 28 selections.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The league's 10 women's outdoor track and field programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 70, followed by men's outdoor track and field (nine programs) with 48 and men's lacrosse (seven programs) with 39.
