04/30/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
Freshmen Jackson Cabot (Dedham, Mass.) and Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.) earned First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference, with Goldberg the selection as Freshman Of the Year, the league announced today. Goldberg and Cabot were the only two Freshmen on the First-Team squad and Goldberg joined Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) as two of only three players on two All-Conference squads, earning spots on the All-Freshman team.
Goldberg leads the Spiders in goal scoring with 26 and tied for fourth in the league with two goals per game. He was the top freshman scorer in the ASun to earn the Freshman of the Year Honor in the program's inaugural season. He added eight assists for 34 total points, sitting seventh in the league in points per game average.
Cabot was the league's choice for the top long stick midfielder and was effective on both ends of the field, finishing second on the team with 48 ground balls and ending third on the squad with 24 caused turnovers. He also added two goals and two assists for his season.
The ASun Second Team included Spider sophomore attackman Brad Burnam (Nedrow, N.Y), who was the team's leader and finished third in the conference with 22 assists. Burnam also scored 12 goals to tie Goldberg with 34 total points, though he played in one more game.
A pair of freshmen defenders, Hynes and Ryan Dennis (Peapack Gladstone, N.J.), rounded out the Richmond members of the Second Team. Hynes was the team leader with 33 caused turnovers, leading the conference in turnovers caused per game. His 70 ground balls were also tops for the Spiders, fourth-most in per-game average in the conference. Hynes added two goals and four assists, mostly on breakaway opportunities this season. Dennis was second on the squad with 26 caused turnovers and added 40 ground balls on the defensive end. He also scored one goal this season.
Goldberg and Hynes were joined on the All-Freshmen team by a pair of Richmond attackmen, J.P. Forester (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Dan Ginestro (Syracuse, N.Y.) along with midfielder Jean-Luc Chetner (Penticton, B.C.). Forester had 25 goals, second-most on the squad this season and found the back of the net in all but one game this season. He was seventh in goal scoring average in the ASun. Ginestro scored the first goal, the first game-winning goal and first man-down goal in program history and tied for the team lead with five man-up goals this season. He scored 13 goals on just 20 shot attempts for the season. Chetner was the lone Spider to record either a goal or an assist in every game this season. He had the best shot percentage (41.0 percent) of any of the top scorers on the team, with 16 goals on just 39 shots.
The Spiders are the four-seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament, hosted by Mercer. The Spiders will face the top-seeded Bears Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game is available for free online at ASun.TV with a win advancing the first-year program to the title game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
