NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) and redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) were both named First-Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference for their outstanding 2014 seasons, the league announced today.
Carrigan was also named the A-10 Rookie of the Year, while she and freshman Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) were placed on the All-Rookie team.
Carrigan led the team with 14 goals, second-most in the league and second-most among NCAA Division I freshmen in the country. That goal total was one shy of tying for the second-most in team history for a single season. Carrigan also finished second in the conference with 32 points, adding her four assists to the goal total for her season.
Riefner was one of just two players in the league to record at least eight goals and assists, tallying nine goals and eight assists for 26 points. Riefner finished fifth in goals and fourth in assists in the league this year. She is the only Spider to net a hat trick this year, getting all three goals in a 3-2 home win over Princeton on September 19. She also tied the school record with three assists in a 3-1 road win at Charleston Southern on September 7.
Prillaman had four goals and six assists this season in her first year of collegiate soccer. She also tied the school record with three assists in a game on September 28 in a 4-2 home victory over James Madison and had the latest game-tying goal of the season for the Spiders when she curled a shot around the Dayton keeper with less than three minutes to go to force overtime two weeks ago.
Richmond is the number-seven seed and takes on second-seeded VCU on Thursday in the A-10 Championship quarterfinals from Dayton, Ohio. Richmond and VCU played to a scoreless draw at Sports Backers Stadium back on October 17. The winner advances to Friday night's 7:30 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the Thursday night quarterfinal between Rhode Island and host Dayton. The Atlantic 10 Digital Network will have a live free video stream of the tournament.
