RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Brooke Binswanger tallied one goal and one assist to lead Richmond to a 3-2 win against VCU at First Market Stadium tonight. The Spiders extended their win streak to three games in their final non-conference match of the fall.
VCU's Hedda Gardsjord gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead when she slipped through the defense and curved the ball into the right side of the net at the 12:57 mark. She beat a charging Megan Cox who made two saves in the first 45 minutes, five for the game.
Binswanger knotted the score when she powered through the middle, fired her initial shot off the sprawling Ram keeper, and then deposited the rebound into the net at 28:00. It was her team-high fourth goal of the season. The Spiders tallied four shots on goal in the first half to the Rams' three.
Richmond (4-5-2) took a 2-1 lead when Olina Vidarsdottir scored her first goal as a Spider, off an assist from Binswanger, in the 64th minute. The Spiders added to their lead when Molly Rettig finished off a breakaway chance with 6:55 remaining. She blasted home her first goal of the season off a perfect feed into the middle of the goal box from Whitney Sikes.
Cox made a spectacular one-handed save with 5:06 remaining before the Rams' Jen Parsons connected on her school-record 38th career goal in the 86th minute to bring the home squad within one.
VCU (5-4-2) out-shot Richmond 21-16 overall but the teams were even 7-7 in shots on goal.
The Spiders return to action this weekend with a pair of Atlantic 10 contests. Richmond will face Duquesne in Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on October 10 before traveling to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure at Noon on October 12.
